Congratulations. You are now a team leader for the first time. You have watched other team leaders, thought about what you liked about their styles and what you didn’t like, but suddenly Facebook ideas don’t fit what you need to know to be the team leader you want to be.
Let’s look at some accountability traits of a good team leader and see which ones describe you, which you read about that you wouldn’t consider desirably and what trait you would like to be able to describe yourself as.
Accountability traits come in subcategories. We will be looking at attributes, skills and knowledge. Each group has a set that will help you go from just Liking a team leader to being able to say why. This will also help you set goals for items that you need to work on.
Attributes
- A good team leader focuses on achieving the goal and getting results.
- He values the others in the team.
- She keeps the promises she makes and honors her commitments.
- He is willing to delegate.
Skills
- The good team leader spends more time focusing on the outcomes than the means to the outcome.
- He practices the characteristics of effective board decision-making.
- She sets high expectations for everyone.
- He practices conflict resolutions skills.
- She designs accurate performance indicators that hold everyone accountable.
- He identifies what controls need to be tight and which need to be loose.
- She nurtures win/win performances and partnership agreements that help the team succeed.
- He appreciates, values and recognizes each person in the organization.
Knowledge
- A good team leader understands the company, along with the roles and responsibilities of others in implementing plans
- He knows what to evaluate.
- She knows any state and federal laws necessary to doing the job, if necessary.
- He has alternative assessment and performance evaluations for different team members based on their goals.
- She knows how to empower, how to create felt ownership and responsibility of the rest of the team.
- He is aware of the synergy among the group.
