Not sure about the importance of blogging for your business? Let's look at some information that might help.

What is blogging? There are blogs and there are blogs. In the beginning blogging was more like a web diary (the word “blog” is a combination of “web log”, which meant a log you kept of your life on the web). Now blogs have exploded out of that narrow definition as people write and read blogs for all sorts of reasons. Small businesses have discovered the value of blogging.

Why should a business blog? Business people go to trade shows, hand out business cards at all sorts of events and have a website on the internet. These things are more than just useful for driving traffic to your website. Blogging is more than just a way to draw people to your website as well. When you blog, you are offering information that will help potential clients find and select your business. Through blogging you are not just getting random traffic, but people who are interested in your product.

Do you have all the clients you can handle? I thought not. But let’s just say that you have enough business right now. What kind of clients are you handling? Are they clients that just fell in your lap or that you took because you needed clients and anyone was better than no one? Wouldn’t you rather have clients that your services are perfect for? Blogging can increase the quality of your client-base, which improves the quality of your business. These optimal clients stay with your company longer which generates more revenues and they in turn will refer other optimal clients.

How often should I publish a blog? The most important answer to that question is that you should publish frequently and consistently. This blog is published every Monday, Wednesday and Friday around the middle of the day. If you don’t write and publish consistently, people won’t keep going back to your site to see what is new. I’m sure you have had experiences where you were looking for information and have come on sites in which nothing has been added to them in several years. You won’t bother going back there again. So if you only publish once a week or once a month, you are way ahead of those sites.

Where am I going to find the time to write consistently? Since there is no hard and fast rule that says how often you need to write your blog, you can work at a pace that suits you. And there is a possibility that you already have content that can be repurposed for your blog. Do you have a trifold, a newsletter, a study for a proposal? All these things can be turned into fodder for your blog?

The new way to attract clients is by giving them valuable information. Are you in?
