Facebook is making it easier for a person to let his friends know what he likes by doing away with the choices to “Share” and to “Recommend”. In the past a person had to make a decision to do one of those three things, which caused confusion. I read it as I can “Like” a site and in doing so I was telling the site that I liked it, period. Sharing meant that I wanted to tell others about the site in more detail. Recommending was like waving a flag to my friends that this was something important.

Now there is only the “Like” button, doing all three jobs. Before when you “Liked” a site, Facebook put a simple note on your wall saying, “You Liked A SITE.” When you press the “Like” button now, Facebook sends a message to your wall with whatever it wants to put as a newsfeed story.

What about the “Like” buttons you see on websites or you have on yours? This was a way for site owners to let friends and people who approved of your site to share content on Facebook. The new “Like” button is going to be even better for marketers because it will mean more traffic to the site. When the visitor to your site “Likes” the site, the content will show up on his Facebook wall and potentially can show up on other users’ walls. This in turn can bring you lots of new users. You might want to take the “Share” button off your website. While it is still being supported and will still work, developer support is going away from using it; and it will fade away.

For your Facebook business page, when someone “Likes” your page, you can begin a relationship with her. If done right, you can nurture this new customer relationship by spending some time with her on Facebook.

The “Like” button can help your business engage in direct conversation with prospects and customers.
