Content marketing as a term is relatively new. Content marketing as a strategy is a bit older, but still recent. Content marketing as a tactic is quite old, however. And, while some things never change, many things evolve over time.

One of the failings of many small business marketers (and quite few large ones!) is the lack of cohesiveness and structure to their content marketing efforts. Because the truth is that survey after survey continue to show that the majority of marketers have embraced content marketing to some degree.

Traditional marketing tactics, including pay-per-click advertising, and other outbound methods, continue to be used by many, if not most businesses day in and day out. While these tactics can work - and often do - they prove to be costly. On the other hand, content marketing tactics has been shown to be far more cost-effective.

At the risk of being overly simplistic, social media can do two primary things for a business: increase awareness and build trust. But, you may ask, can't you sell and advertise there, too? Yes, you can. But those are not the predominant benefits of having a social media presence for businesses.
